Le Thé Chez Vierotchka

New Orleans - The Natural History

"After Katrina, people ask why would anyone establish a city in a place that is below sea level, floods nearly every year, is as hot and humid as any tropical jungle, subject to outbreaks of deadly disease and faces annihilation as the result of a direct hit from a hurricane? More to the point, why would anyone try to save it? When you mention New Orleans to most people, the images evoked are of a lively port city populated by a sultry mix of people from many different cultures and, of course, jazz, Mardi Gras and world class cuisine. What few people realize is that the very forces that created New Orleans now threaten its very existence. The eco-system is incredibly fragile and volatile, and if no action is taken, the city could be wiped out in the next hurricane or gradually swept into the sea from the current course of things.

"With the critical issues of global warming and our ongoing struggle to strike a healthy balance between a healty environment and a growing economy, New Orleans serves as a microcosm in which we can examine the critical issues facing our planet."

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers

Mis à disposition par Robert Greenwald - http://iraqforsale.org/

See my previous post about this film.

"Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers is the story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war. Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed and Uncovered) takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private corporations making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so. Brave New Films are both funded and distributed completely outside corporate America. Over 3000 people donated to make Iraq for Sale, and it is up to you to distribute it. Give copies to co-workers and organize a screening in your neighborhood. Get involved!!"

Tashi Delek ! The flying notebook

"Tashi Delek! The flying notebook is one of the films for the 2004 diploma in camera and editing of the Zelig School for Documentary, Television and New Media, Bolzano. The film stemmed from a twinning project between the elementary school Manzoni in Bolzano Italy and the Serkong Primary School in Tabo and tells the story of how the children of the two schools got in touch with a distant culture through the comparison of universal features and needs such as playing, studying, eating, sleeping, etc Tabo is a small village situated in the valley of the Spiti in the north of India. It is famous for an important monastery which was restored towards the end of the year 1000 and which houses precious treasures of Buddhist art. This region, in fact, has always been inhabited by populations of Tibetan origin as the Spiti was a Tibetan principality up to the middle of the 19th century and has become part of India only since Tibet, China and India divided up the borders. The Spiti is a dry desolate valley in the Himalayas, situated at an altitude of 3000-4000 metre. Its location has always kept it isolated from external influences and tourism has reached the area only in the early 1990s. However, if the isolation has allowed its population to preserve their thousand-year-old culture almost intact, at the same time it has made them very poor, and they are now at risk of extinction."

Shamans Of The Amazon (This is for my dear, dear friend Dorothy)

Here is the text that was posted with this video (with my comment in italics added to it):
(SBS Independent / The Australian Film Commision)

Excellent documentary about the Amazonian Shamans and their use of the sacred Ayahuasca vine to communicate with the Spirits of the Forest. Includes footage of peaceful drug-prohibition protests, an interview with Terence Mckenna, criticism of the so called "war on drugs" (essentially a form of cultural genocide), the corruption within large oil companies and governments, many civil rights issues, etc.

During the making of this film:

          * 16 million acres of Amazon Rainforest was destroyed.

          * 150,000 species became extinct.

          * In Ecuador, 9 oil spills released millions of gallons of crude oil into the head waters of the Amazon.

          * Scientists worldwide agreed that Global Warming and climate change is a major threat facing all life on Earth.

          * Natural disasters including volcanic eruptions increased.

          * In the Netherlands, the case against the Santo Daime was thrown out of court. The judge found Ayahuasca use was not a risk to public health and their constitutional right to freedom of religion must be respected.

          * Spain, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium and The Netherlands decriminalised most drugs. (I'm not quite sure this is accurate, at least with regard to Switzerland -Vierotchka)

          * The USA gave the Taliban in Afghanistan $43 million dollars for the War on Drugs.

          * The USA was voted off the United Nations Human Rights Commision.

          * Humanity stands at the crossroads...

I also warmly recommend Jeremy Narby's book The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the Origins of Knowledge, which you can certainly order from your local bookshop or from Amazon.com, or from Penguin Books (Canada), and you can get the French translation (originally published by Editions Georg and translated by Yona Birker-Chavanne) from a vast number of sources.
